R v. Ejigu, 2016 BCSC 2278

Jessica Lithwick was co-counsel for an individual charged with first-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of an associate. The accused had immigrated from Ethiopia a few years prior to the incident and suffered from significant mental illness. Jessica was involved in a constitutional challenge to s. 16 of the Criminal Code and was counsel for Mr. Ejigu at trial, where she was acquitted of all charges on the basis that she was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the offence. As a result of her work on this case, Jessica has significant knowledge of the law as it relates to mental illness.
